The plan
Day 1: Arrive Keflavik, pick up car, head east toward Selfoss. Day 2: South coast -- Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss, Reynisfjara black beach, overnight Vik. Day 3: Glacier lagoon Jokulsarlon, drive to Hofn. Day 4: East fjords, overnight Egilsstadir. Day 5: Myvatn thermal area, overnight Akureyri. Day 6: Whale watching Husavik or west toward Snaefellsnes peninsula. Day 7: Back to Reykjavik via Borgarnes, fly home. July-August for midnight sun; September-October for fewer crowds.
Day-by-day
- Day 1
Keflavik arrival, drive to Selfoss
Land KEF, pick up the 4x4 rental (book a month out, prices surge in summer). Blue Lagoon on the way into town — pre-book the 2-hour slot (noon-ish is a sweet spot after the morning flight rush). Drive east past Reykjavik on Route 1 toward Selfoss or Hella. Overnight in a guesthouse; stock groceries at a Bonus supermarket for the week.
- Day 2
South coast waterfalls and black beach
Seljalandsfoss (walk behind the falls — wear a rain jacket), Skogafoss (climb the stairs for the top view), Solheimasandur DC-3 plane wreck (4km one-way walk on a flat volcanic plain). Reynisfjara black sand beach at Vik — mind the sneaker waves, they've killed tourists. Overnight Vik at the Icelandair Hotel or a guesthouse.
- Day 3
Glaciers to Hofn
Morning Skaftafell section of Vatnajokull National Park — the Svartifoss basalt waterfall is a 2h round-trip hike. Afternoon at Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon — boat tour optional but worth the $60. Diamond Beach across the road has iceberg chunks washing up. Overnight Hofn; try the langoustine at Pakkhus.
- Day 4
East fjords
Scenic coastal driving with tiny fishing villages — Djupivogur, Breiddalsvik, Reydarfjordur. Fewer crowds than the south, more reindeer sightings (yes, really). Overnight Egilsstadir or Seydisfjordur — the latter is a picturesque fjord town with a rainbow-painted street and a Wes Anderson vibe.
- Day 5
Myvatn to Akureyri
Drive Ring Road north through the high desert. Dettifoss waterfall detour (brutal raw power). Lake Myvatn: thermal baths (Myvatn Nature Baths — cheaper and quieter than Blue Lagoon), Grjotagja cave, Hverir geothermal field. Continue to Akureyri, Iceland's 2nd city. Overnight there.
- Day 6
Whale watching + Snaefellsnes peninsula
Morning whale watching from Husavik (north) or start the drive west toward Snaefellsnes (south coast alternative). If Snaefellsnes: Kirkjufell mountain (the cover of every Iceland travel photo), Djupalonssandur black beach, Arnarstapi coastal cliffs. Long driving day; overnight Stykkisholmur or back toward Borgarnes.
- Day 7
Return to Reykjavik, fly home
Short drive back to Reykjavik. Laugavegur shopping street morning, Hallgrimskirkja church (climb the tower). Late lunch at Kol or Dill. Drive to KEF for evening flight, return the car. Factor 45 min airport return + 2h before flight.
When to go
June-August is midnight-sun season — 20+ hours of daylight, all Ring Road sections open, but accommodation books out 3-4 months ahead and prices peak. September is the sweet spot: aurora starts being visible, summer tourists thin out, all roads still open, prices drop 20-30%. October-May: ice cave season starts November, aurora is prime Sep-March, but F-roads and some Ring Road sections close — 4x4 and winter tires required. Never attempt the full loop December-February without serious winter-driving experience.
Budget tips
Iceland is expensive — accept it. Save 30-50% by staying in guesthouses instead of Icelandair Hotels ($100-150 vs $250-400/night). Cook 2 meals/day from Bonus supermarkets (the pink pig logo; cheapest chain). The gas station grills (N1, Olis) do a passable burger for $15 — the only affordable hot meal in small towns. Skip the Blue Lagoon and go to Myvatn Nature Baths instead ($55 vs $100). Tap water is superb — don't buy bottled.
Getting around
Rental car is the only real option for the Ring Road. 4WD is required off Route 1 and strongly recommended even on the main road shoulder seasons. Book with an Iceland-only rental agency (Sixt, Blue Car Rental, Hertz Iceland) — international chains cost 50% more for equivalent cars. Gas is $7-8/gallon. No need for public transit outside Reykjavik. Road closures are posted on road.is — check daily in shoulder season.
What to pack
Waterproof jacket and pants (non-negotiable — expect rain every day regardless of season). Thermal base layers for summer evenings and all winter. Sturdy waterproof hiking boots. Swimsuit for thermal baths and pools. Headlamp for hikes/caves. Eye mask if visiting in midnight-sun summer — hotels vary on blackout curtains. Universal adapter (Iceland uses EU plugs). A full reusable water bottle — glacial water is free and better than anything bottled.
