Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is the primary airport for Mumbai and the second-busiest in India. BOM handles around 52 million passengers per year and sits about 12 miles northwest of central Mumbai. The airport is the primary commercial aviation gateway to India's financial capital and handles extensive operations from most Indian carriers plus major international airlines. BOM has two terminals (T1 for domestic flights and T2 for international operations and some premium domestic). The airport's IATA code BOM is derived from the old English-language name of the city, Bombay, and has remained unchanged since the city's official rename to Mumbai in 1995. This makes BOM one of the most visible examples of how IATA codes persist through city renaming. Terminal 2, which opened in 2014, is known for its distinctive peacock-inspired design and is one of the more architecturally notable airport buildings in Asia. The airport is constrained by its location inside Mumbai, with little room for runway expansion. A second Mumbai airport at Navi Mumbai has been under construction for years and is scheduled to eventually relieve pressure on BOM.
