About commercial flights
How is flight duration calculated?
Published flight times include taxi, takeoff, cruise, descent, and taxi-in at the destination. Duration varies with prevailing winds — eastbound transatlantic flights are typically 45-60 minutes shorter than westbound flights on the same route because of the jet stream.
Why is the actual flight path longer than the straight-line distance?
Commercial flights follow great-circle routes adjusted for winds, traffic, and airspace restrictions. ETOPS (Extended Twin-engine Operations) rules keep twin-engine jets within a certified distance of a diversion airport on oceanic segments, which sometimes pulls the route off the straight line.
What is the difference between a nonstop and a direct flight?
A nonstop flight has no intermediate stops. A direct flight shares a single flight number end-to-end but may include one or more stops — passengers usually stay on the same aircraft. Always filter for nonstop when total travel time matters.
How do airlines decide which aircraft to use on a route?
The main factors are demand (passenger volume + cargo), range needed, cost per available seat mile, and airport-gate compatibility. A thin 6-hour route typically gets a narrowbody like the A321LR; a dense 10-hour transatlantic gets a widebody like the 777 or A350.
