How Airbus Smart Catering Uses AI to Measure Cabin Food Waste
Airbus tested Smart Catering with Virgin Atlantic in 2025. The prototype uses cameras and crew devices to track meal consumption and inventory; its broader waste reductions remain a stated potential, not a proven fleet-wide result.

Airbus introduced Smart Catering as a data and artificial-intelligence tool for tracking food and drink during cabin service. The idea is practical: an airline cannot plan catering accurately if it does not know which meals were taken, returned untouched, or left unused on a specific route.
The product is a tested prototype, not evidence that airlines have already eliminated a fixed percentage of catering waste across their fleets.
What Airbus tested
Airbus says it first tested the concept in a Virgin Atlantic ground-cabin mock-up in the United Kingdom. In 2025, the companies then ran live trials on an Airbus A330 between London and New York and an A350 between London and Orlando.
The Airbus Smart Catering account names Virgin Atlantic as the trial airline. It does not support earlier claims that Lufthansa or Delta had committed to the product.
How the system works
The software is designed to use cameras already available on crew tablets or mobile devices. As a tray is moved into or out of a trolley, computer vision can identify the meal and update inventory. The same workflow can track drinks.
Crew members can see where stock is located, what remains available, and dietary or allergen information. Data collected across flights can then be analyzed on the ground to compare demand by route and service.
The operational goal is not simply to load less food. It is to match the mix and quantity more closely to what passengers actually select while preserving enough stock to deliver the planned service.
What the waste figures mean
Airbus cites an industry estimate of 3.6 million tonnes of cabin and catering waste per year based on 2024–2025 IATA and Aviation Sustainability Forum data. It says 18% to 20% of that waste is untouched food and drink.
Those are sector estimates, not the measured waste rate on every airline or flight. The earlier FlightQ version used a hypothetical 20% aircraft waste figure as if it were a typical operating result. That was not supported and has been removed.
Airbus says the approach has the potential to produce double-digit reductions in preventable food-and-beverage waste. "Potential" is important: the public case study does not provide a controlled fleet-wide result, a customer deployment count, or audited savings.
Why catering waste is difficult
Airlines plan meals before they know every passenger's final preference. Last-minute booking changes, missed connections, cabin upgrades, route-specific tastes, special meals, and food-safety rules all affect what can be reused or discarded.
International catering waste is also subject to health and biosecurity controls. Some material must be incinerated or sent to landfill rather than donated or composted. Better demand data can reduce what is loaded unnecessarily, but it does not remove those legal constraints.
What has been demonstrated
The public evidence supports four conclusions:
- Airbus built a working Smart Catering prototype.
- Virgin Atlantic participated in ground and in-flight trials in 2025.
- The system can use camera recognition and crew devices to record consumption and inventory.
- Airbus expects route-level data to help airlines reduce preventable waste.
It does not yet establish adoption by multiple named airlines, a guaranteed waste-reduction percentage, or a measurable fuel-saving result. Those questions require customer deployments and published operating data.
Smart Catering is best understood as a measurement and planning tool. Its value will depend on whether airlines can turn the information it collects into repeatable changes in menu design, loading, and service without reducing passenger choice.
