Hong Kong International Airport is the primary gateway to Hong Kong and one of the busiest airports in Asia. HKG handles around 43 million passengers per year (recovering from pandemic lows) and sits on Chek Lap Kok Island off the north coast of Lantau Island. The airport replaced the legendary Kai Tak Airport in 1998, which had been notorious for its approach through a densely populated urban area. The new Chek Lap Kok site is a reclaimed land project on what was originally a small fishing island, and the construction effort was one of the largest civil engineering projects of the late 20th century. HKG is the primary hub for Cathay Pacific, plus a major base for Cathay Dragon (until its 2020 closure), Hong Kong Airlines, and other carriers. The airport is connected to central Hong Kong by the Airport Express train, which reaches Hong Kong Station in Central in about 24 minutes. HKG has been particularly affected by the pandemic disruption and political events affecting Hong Kong, but remains one of the most important international gateways in Asia.
