Washington Dulles International Airport
Washington Dulles International Airport is a major international gateway for the Washington DC metropolitan area and a hub for United Airlines. IAD handles around 24 million passengers per year and sits about 26 miles west of downtown Washington in northern Virginia. United operates a substantial hub at IAD, focused on transatlantic and long-haul flying. The airport has direct service to most major European capitals, Middle Eastern hubs, and a growing number of Asian cities. IAD's international network is distinctively global for an American hub, with more direct long-haul destinations than most secondary hubs. The airport's distinctive mobile lounge system, which used to transport passengers between the terminal and remote gates on large wheeled vehicles, has been mostly replaced by a conventional AeroTrain system connecting the main terminal to Concourses A, B, and C. The airport's original terminal building, designed by Eero Saarinen and completed in 1962, remains one of the most striking pieces of airport architecture in the United States. The IATA code IAD was chosen because DIA, which would have been the obvious abbreviation for Dulles International Airport, was already in use.
