Madrid Barajas International Airport

Madrid-Barajas Airport, officially Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, is the primary airport for Madrid and one of the largest in Europe. MAD handles around 60 million passengers per year and sits about nine miles northeast of central Madrid. The airport is the primary hub for Iberia and a major base for Iberia Express, Vueling, Ryanair, and easyJet. Madrid's international network is especially strong to Latin America, reflecting historical, linguistic, and economic connections between Spain and its former colonies. Iberia operates daily flights to most major cities in South and Central America, making MAD one of the most important Latin American gateways in Europe. The airport has four terminals, with the distinctive Terminal 4 designed by Antonio Lamela and Richard Rogers opening in 2006. Terminal 4 features undulating bamboo ceilings and is widely regarded as one of the most architecturally significant airport buildings in the world. MAD is connected to central Madrid by the Metro, Cercanías commuter rail, and multiple bus lines.
