Chicago O'Hare International Airport
Chicago O'Hare International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world and the primary hub for United Airlines, with American Airlines also operating a large hub here. ORD handles around 75 million passengers per year. The airport sits about 17 miles northwest of downtown Chicago on a site that was originally Orchard Field, an airfield used by the Douglas Aircraft Company during the Second World War. When the site was expanded into a commercial airport in the 1940s, the field kept the code ORD after its original Orchard name. It was renamed O'Hare in 1949 after Lieutenant Commander Edward O'Hare, a US Navy pilot killed in the Pacific, but the three-letter code stayed. ORD is one of the most extensive airports in the world for long-haul connections, with United operating transpacific flights to most major Asian cities and American operating a substantial transatlantic network from the O'Hare hub. The airport's terminal layout is complex, and connections between some terminals require a shuttle bus or train. ORD has been undergoing a multi-billion-dollar modernization program that will eventually consolidate the terminal infrastructure.
