Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport
Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport is the primary international airport for Australia and the busiest airport in Oceania. SYD handles around 40 million passengers per year and sits about six miles south of central Sydney. The airport is a major hub for Qantas and Virgin Australia, plus a significant base for Jetstar. Sydney's international network is particularly extensive to Asia, the Americas, and Europe (via Dubai and Singapore connections). Qantas operates flagship routes like Sydney to Los Angeles, Sydney to Dallas, and Sydney to Singapore, and will soon add Sydney to London nonstop on the A350-1000 under Project Sunrise. The airport has three terminals: T1 for international, T2 for domestic non-Qantas, and T3 for domestic Qantas operations. SYD is located close to densely populated residential areas, which creates noise constraints that limit overnight operations. A second Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek, Western Sydney International, is under construction and scheduled to open in 2026 as an alternative to SYD.
