Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic and has been for most of the last two decades. ATL handles around 100 million passengers per year, powered by its role as the primary hub for Delta Air Lines, which accounts for roughly 80 percent of the airport's traffic. The airport sits about seven miles south of downtown Atlanta and serves as a transfer point for passengers connecting between the eastern United States, Latin America, Europe, and an increasing number of African and Middle Eastern destinations. ATL's geographic advantage is that it sits within a two-hour flight of about 80 percent of the American population, which makes it the natural transfer hub for the southeastern United States. The airport's international terminal, Concourse F, connects by train to the main terminal and handles Delta's extensive international network plus a smaller presence from foreign carriers. ATL is also known for its unusually efficient taxiway layout, the result of a deliberate design choice in the 1980s that optimized the airport for rapid aircraft turns and short ground times.
