Harry Reid International Airport

Harry Reid International Airport, formerly known as McCarran International Airport, is the primary airport serving Las Vegas and one of the busiest airports in the United States. LAS handles around 57 million passengers per year, driven almost entirely by tourism rather than by being a hub. The airport sits about five miles south of the Las Vegas Strip and is unusual among major airports in that it has very few connecting passengers. The vast majority of travelers are either originating or terminating their journey in Las Vegas, which makes LAS's passenger mix quite different from hub airports like Atlanta or Dallas. The airport is served by almost every major American carrier plus a significant international presence from Canadian, Mexican, and increasingly European and Asian carriers. In 2021 the airport was renamed from McCarran after the late US Senator Harry Reid, and the IATA code remained LAS. The original McCarran name and LAS code are a good example of how IATA codes persist through renaming. The airport has been expanding to accommodate the continued growth of Las Vegas tourism, with new Concourse D gates and improved ground transportation connections.
