Orlando International Airport
Orlando International Airport is the primary airport serving central Florida and one of the busiest tourism-driven airports in the world. MCO handles around 57 million passengers per year. The airport sits on the site of the former McCoy Air Force Base, a Strategic Air Command facility that closed in 1975. The IATA code MCO is a memorial to the old base and has no obvious connection to the word Orlando. Today, MCO is the gateway to Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and the broader Florida tourism industry. The airport's passenger mix is overwhelmingly leisure, with heavy use by ultra-low-cost carriers like Frontier, Spirit, and Allegiant alongside full-service carriers. Southwest Airlines operates one of its largest bases at MCO. The airport has been undergoing significant expansion, including the Terminal C South project that opened in 2022 and added 20 new international gates to accommodate Europe to Latin America connecting traffic. MCO is also one of the largest Brightline high-speed rail destinations, connecting to Miami and points in between.
