Tampa International Airport
Tampa International Airport is the primary airport for the Tampa Bay metropolitan area and one of the busiest airports in Florida. TPA handles around 23 million passengers per year and sits about six miles west of downtown Tampa. The airport has a distinctive landside-airside design, with a central landside terminal and five satellite airside concourses connected by automated people-movers. This configuration was innovative when TPA opened in 1971 and has been widely copied by other airports. TPA's passenger mix is heavily weighted toward leisure traffic, serving tourists visiting the Tampa Bay area, Orlando tourism, and the Gulf Coast. The airport is a base for Southwest, JetBlue, and several ultra-low-cost carriers. International service is primarily to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and a growing European network. TPA has been expanding its main terminal with a new consolidated rental car facility and improved ground transportation.
