John F Kennedy International Airport
John F. Kennedy International Airport is the busiest international gateway in the New York metropolitan area and one of the most important airports in the United States. JFK handles around 62 million passengers per year and serves as a hub for Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, and American Airlines, plus a significant base for dozens of international carriers. The airport has six active terminals. Terminal 1 handles mixed international carriers. Terminal 4 is Delta's international and premium domestic gateway. Terminal 5 is JetBlue's primary facility. Terminal 7 is being demolished and will be replaced by an expanded Terminal 1. Terminal 8 houses American Airlines and its Oneworld partners. JFK opened in 1948 as Idlewild Airport, with the IATA code IDL, and was renamed after President Kennedy in 1963 following his assassination. The code was changed to JFK at that time, one of the few major American airports to ever have its IATA code changed. The airport has been undergoing a multi-year renovation that will eventually consolidate and modernize all six terminals. JFK's international reach is its defining feature, with nonstop service to over 70 countries.
