What Aircraft Does American Fly? Mainline and Eagle Fleets

American Airlines operates Airbus and Boeing aircraft in its mainline fleet, while wholly owned and third-party regional carriers fly smaller jets under the American Eagle brand. Those fleets belong in separate totals because the operator and passenger experience differ.

American's mainline fleet

American reported 1,013 mainline aircraft in its 2025 Form 10-K:

• 484 Airbus A320-family aircraft;
• 392 Boeing 737-family aircraft;
• 67 Boeing 777s; and
• 70 Boeing 787s.

The Airbus total includes 132 A319s, 48 A320s, 218 A321s, 84 A321neos, and two A321XLRs. The 737 total includes 303 737-800s and 89 737 MAX 8s.

The widebody fleet included 47 777-200ERs, 20 777-300ERs, 37 787-8s, and 33 787-9s on the reporting date.

Narrowbody aircraft

American uses A319s, A320s, A321s, A321neos, A321XLRs, 737-800s, and 737 MAX 8s across domestic, Caribbean, Latin American, and selected longer routes.

The A321XLR entered American's fleet during 2025. The filing counted two operating aircraft at year end, while other deliveries remained future commitments. A current guide must not treat the entire order as already delivered.

American lists passenger-facing aircraft and cabin information on its planes page. Seat counts can still vary by subfleet, and an aircraft assignment can change before departure.

The filing's seating figures are averages for each model group, not a guarantee for every tail number. Refurbishment programs, certification schedules, and temporary operating changes can create more than one configuration within a model. The live seat map is therefore the better source for choosing a seat.

Widebody aircraft

American's long-haul widebodies are the 777-200ER, 777-300ER, 787-8, and 787-9. The 777-300ER is larger than the 777-200ER, while the 787 family is a newer-generation widebody.

The exact premium cabin, seat map, and amenities depend on the model and configuration. A statement that every “777” or every “787” has the same layout is too broad.

American Eagle regional aircraft

American's filing separately reported 567 regional aircraft operated under capacity-purchase agreements as American Eagle. Regional operators use aircraft such as the Embraer E170 and E175 and Bombardier CRJ variants.

These aircraft may have American branding and flight numbers, but another airline can be the legal operator. The itinerary identifies flights as “operated by” Envoy, PSA, Piedmont, Republic, SkyWest, or another partner as applicable.

Adding 567 regional aircraft to 1,013 mainline aircraft produces a broader network total, not a 1,580-aircraft American mainline fleet.

How to check your aircraft

During booking, open the flight details and seat map. For an American Eagle flight, also read the operating-carrier line. Check again near departure because maintenance and schedule changes can trigger substitutions.

The evidence-based short answer is 1,013 mainline Airbus and Boeing aircraft at year-end 2025, supported by a separate 567-aircraft American Eagle regional fleet. Orders and later deliveries should be labeled with their own dates rather than folded into that snapshot.
