The World's Longest Flights in 2026
Singapore–New York remains the benchmark for scheduled ultra-long-haul flying. Here is what can be verified now, how rankings work, and what Qantas Project Sunrise could change.
Ultra-long-haul rankings look simple until the definitions start moving. Airlines change seasonal schedules, winds change published block times, and two airports serving the same city can produce slightly different distances. A useful ranking therefore needs a date, a consistent distance method, and confirmation that a flight is actually being sold.
This guide was reviewed on July 23, 2026. It treats a flight as current only when the operating airline is offering the nonstop service. Distances are approximate great-circle distances between airports, not the track an aircraft happened to fly on one day.
Singapore to New York remains the benchmark
Singapore Airlines sells nonstop service between Singapore Changi and both New York-area airports: Newark and John F. Kennedy International. The airline's current Newark flight page confirms that the route is operating.
Both New York services use the Airbus A350-900ULR. The ULR is not a completely different aircraft from the standard A350-900; it is a long-range configuration that can carry additional fuel and is paired with a lower-density cabin. Singapore Airlines uses business and premium-economy seating on these aircraft rather than a standard economy cabin.
Depending on which New York airport and direction is measured, the nonstop is roughly 9,500 statute miles and is normally scheduled at around 18 to 19 hours. Wind and routing can move the actual time materially, so a single timetable figure should not be treated as a permanent record.
The next group is close enough that schedules matter
Several operating routes sit behind Singapore–New York in the same broad ultra-long-haul category. Doha–Auckland, Perth–London, Dallas–Melbourne, New York–Auckland, Bengaluru–San Francisco, and Dallas–Sydney are among the city pairs commonly found near the top of current lists.
The exact order depends on the endpoints and method used. Great-circle distance is reproducible, while scheduled duration is not a clean distance measure. A flight may also appear in an airline timetable only seasonally. That is why this page avoids claiming that a route is permanently third or fifth without a date attached.
These routes are flown with aircraft such as the Airbus A350, Boeing 787, Boeing 777-200LR, and Airbus A380. Aircraft assignment can change by season or operating day, so passengers should check the airline's current schedule rather than relying on a static article.
What makes a route ultra-long-haul
Range is only one part of the decision. An airline also needs enough passengers willing to pay for the nonstop, suitable diversion airports and operating approvals, crew-rest facilities, and a payload plan that works in adverse winds.
Fuel creates a compounding penalty: carrying fuel requires more fuel. Airlines may therefore limit cargo, reduce seat count, or use a premium-heavy cabin to keep a very long route commercially viable. A route that an aircraft can technically fly is not automatically a route an airline can sell profitably every day.
Project Sunrise is not yet an operating record
Qantas Project Sunrise is designed around nonstop Sydney and Melbourne services to London and New York using specially configured Airbus A350-1000 aircraft. Qantas continued to describe the program as a future network advantage in its first-half 2026 investor presentation.
Those flights are important, but a planned route should not be mixed into a list of operating services. Until Qantas begins selling and operating the flights, Singapore–New York remains the practical scheduled benchmark.
How to compare long flights accurately
For a current comparison, check four things:
- Confirm the nonstop is being sold by the operating airline.
- Compare airport-to-airport great-circle distance, not city-center distance.
- Record the date because seasonal services and frequencies change.
- Treat block time as an operating estimate affected by winds, airspace, and taxi time.
That method is less dramatic than a fixed top-ten list, but it stays useful when schedules change. The real achievement is not a one-day duration record. It is operating a very long nonstop repeatedly with a payload, crew plan, and schedule that passengers can actually book.
