How to play Getaway
Getaway is a free daily travel budget game built on real airfares — part trip-planning puzzle, part strategy game.
- Read the day's brief. You start in a real city with a fixed budget and one objective, like reaching an Olympic host city or an island.
- Scan the fares. The destination grid shows real published airfares from wherever you are. Cheap regional hops preserve budget; long hauls eat it.
- Route through the objective. Objective cities are marked in the grid. Your trip only scores if the route visits one of them.
- Stretch the map. Your score is the distance from the start city to wherever you finish, so the best runs pair a qualifying stop with one last long jump.
- End the trip. Cash out when you think the budget has nothing left to give, compare against the leaderboard, and come back tomorrow for a new city and objective.
What is Getaway?
Every morning you wake up in a different real city with a budget and a single objective — visit an Olympic host city, reach a capital, get to an island. Every hop you book prices from real published fares, so the game is the same calculus as planning an actual trip: where can I afford to go, and what's the cleverest route to something memorable?
Objective cities are marked in the destination grid, but they are not always the best place to finish. Sometimes the sharp route is a cheap objective stop followed by one last long jump; sometimes it is better to spend nearly everything reaching a qualifying city far from home. End the trip when you think your route has squeezed the most distance out of the budget.
Frequently asked questions
How does Getaway work?
Each day you start in a real city with a budget and one objective — like "visit an Olympic host city" or "visit a city on a major river". You hop between cities on real airfares, trying to satisfy the objective and make it a trip worth bragging about without busting the budget.
Are the fares real?
Yes — every hop prices from real published airfares for that day. Cheap regional hops leave budget for the big objective leg; splurge early and you might strand yourself.
What am I trying to maximize?
Your score is the distance from the start city to the final city, but only if your route visits a city that satisfies the daily objective. A huge trip that misses the objective scores 0 km, so the best route balances reach, price, and the required stop.
Is Getaway free?
Yes. The daily puzzle is free with no account required. Submitting to the leaderboard requires a free account.
